TIPS FOR RUNNING, WALKING, AND CYCLING IN THE DARK

Winter approaches and the days get shorter. The number of daylight hours decreases and then the time changes, leaving us even less time to get out there after work in daylight hours.

Here are several tips on how to stay safe out there.

  1. Wear bright, light colored outer layers that are reflective so that you are visible to cars. It amazes me how many runners and walkers wear dark clothes when it is dark. Wear a blinking light.
  2. Choose a route that is well-lit so you can see where you are going and where you are placing your feet. Call me chicken, but I don’t like to run on the trail in the dark even with a head lamp because you can’t see the roots and rocks as well.
  3. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.
  4. Take your cell phone with you.
  5. Choose a route though a safe area or neighborhood.
  6. Go with a friend.
  7. Change your schedule so that you avoid the dark, go first thing in the morning or during lunchtime.
  8. Consider using a treadmill or lifting weights as alternatives.

Many of you know this stuff.
This is just a reminder.
