RUNNING IN THE SUMMER

By Doug Milch, DPM

Summer is here and it is time to remind ourselves about running in the heat. There are some rules to follow to ensure that we stay safe.

Some Suggestions:

  • Don’t run in the middle of the day. Run in the early morning or late evening when it is cooler.
  • Wear light color clothes.
  • Wear a hat with a visor.
  • Use sunscreen
  • Drink Drink Drink! Drink water and electrolyte replacement drinks.
  • Know where all the water fountains are if you are running through town.
  • Carry water with you or leave it out on the trail ahead of time.
  • If it’s crazy hot, consider using the treadmill indoors.
  • Make allowances for the hot weather and decrease your mileage and intensity on hot days.
  • Acclimatize to the hot weather by not doing too much right away when the weather turns hot.
  • Reconsider doing hot weather long distance events.

I hope that some of these suggestions help.

Happy Running!
